Local food is one of the most fascinating ways to better understand the culture and traditions of the country you’re traveling through. In every corner of the world, authentic treats await you, sold at street markets or prepared in families from generation to generation. So I had an idea — to invite you on a virtual journey to discover iconic snacks from around the world. Are you with me? Then let’s begin!

1) Japan – Taiyaki

Taiyaki is a classic Japanese fish-shaped pastry. It’s crispy on the outside and filled with either sweet or savory filling inside. Traditionally, it’s stuffed with sweet adzuki bean paste, but modern recipes may include custard, chocolate, or even savory fillings. Its charming shape and unforgettable taste attract both adults and children, not only from Japan. Tourists from all over the world love trying taiyaki. I’d definitely give it a try, would you?

2) South Korea – Tteokbokki

Tteokbokki is a popular Korean street snack made of rice cakes simmered in a sweet and spicy chili sauce (gochujang). It’s often served with fish cakes, boiled eggs, or green onions. The rice cakes have a neutral taste but quickly absorb the sauce, becoming rich and aromatic. Tteokbokki has a unique flavour that’s hard to compare to anything else, which is why tourists often add it to their must-try list.

3) Germany – Pretzel

When you hear the word “pretzel,” you probably imagine a golden twisted pastry generously sprinkled with sea salt. And yes — it’s one of the most popular snacks originating from Germany! You can find it at fairs, bakeries, and of course at Oktoberfest. A pretzel is delicious on its own, but sometimes it’s enjoyed with mustard, cheese, or traditional German sausages. It’s also a perfect on-the-go snack — just like my fruit rolls, haha!

4) Portugal — Pastel de Nata

These small custard tarts are a sweet symbol of Portugal. The combination of flaky pastry with a crispy top and smooth custard inside entices dessert lovers from all over the world.

5) Spain – Churros

Churros are Spain’s most famous dessert, sold in local cafés, food markets, and street kiosks. These fried choux pastry sticks are dipped into hot melted chocolate and then enjoyed. Sounds tempting, right?

6) Scotland – Shortbread

Just imagine: buttery sweet shortbread has been baked since the 13th century! Since then, its recipe has hardly changed. Classic Scottish shortbread requires only butter, sugar, and wheat flour. Just three ingredients and you can bake a cookie that’s considered one of the most iconic snacks.
